Altran Solutions provides microbiological product development services to a wide range of industries including consumer and building products manufacturers to biomedical (medical device) and pharmaceutical manufacturers. Altran's microbiologists interface with our design engineering and materials science professionals to provide product development services that, not only encompasses bringing our client's ideas to bench top efficacy/feasibility testing and scale-up to manufacture, but also applying developed technology in new markets through proof of concept testing.

Altran performs their microbiology development testing following standard methods and published procedures and often customizes testing protocols to suit the client's product development needs. Altran's quality assurance program assures our client's that the work conducted meets and often exceeds industrial standards (ISO 9000, USP, cGMP, GLP).

Altran conducts all of their contract microbiology work in strict confidence assuring our clients that their product development activities are secure when they retain our expertise.

Capabilities

  • Dynamic and static test conditions
Altran designs and performs microbial exposure/challenge studies under static and dynamic (flowing) test conditions employing both batch and continuous microbial culture methods.
  • Biohazard Level II testing
Altran's microbiology lab is biohazard class II capable often employing microbes that are rated Class II hazardous by the CDC, USDA and EPA for growth and challenge studies involving the development of industrial, consumer, medical device, and pharmaceutical products.
  • Biocide and Preservative Testing
Altran follows standardized (ASTM, JIS, AATCC, USP) and published methods for development of products with antimicrobial additives. Custom assays are developed to support studies where the product's intended end use environment is carefully simulated for true proof of efficacy.
  • Biofilm development and inhibition studies
Altran often employs flow cell technology to study the microbial colonization characteristics (biofilm development) of materials under laminar or turbulent flow. Flow cell studies can be engineered for real time and time course evaluation of microbial colonization or inhibition to engineered materials. In our studies, we can incorporate automation of the electromechanical and physicochemical features to better simulate a products end use environment. Automation can often include the real-time measurement and data capture of a study's simulated parameters.
  • Anaerobic microbiology
Altran performs anaerobic microbiology testing using a Forma Scientific anaerobic chamber.
  • Materials evaluation
A critical part of material development is assuring that additives or treatments intended to enhance certain product attributes do not negatively influence other critical material attributes. Altran maintains a staff of materials scientists and engineers as well as the laboratory facilities to fully characterize material and product performance. Prototypical antimicrobial products attributes are quantified and compared to specified performance characteristics or against existing products. Critical attributes depend upon the intended application, ranging from mechanical strength, vapor permeability, corrosion resistance, thermal stability and many more.
